Yet Another Reason Gmail is the Best Email Provider

Hot off the presses from Google Labs, well okay actually a couple of days late.  Here is the next great feature to enhance your gmail account.  I am a huge fan of gmail and have had an account since before they were publicly available.  They continue to improve and advance the features of the product, making it absolutely essential for me.  Plus, it integrates so well with the many other free google products, such as picasa.  Here is the latest from google labs:

New in Labs: Undo Send

Thursday, March 19, 2009 3:39 PM

Sometimes I regret sending a message the morning after. Other times I send a message and then immediately notice a mistake. I forget to attach a file or email the birthday girl that I can't make her surprise party. I can rush to close my browser or unplug the Internet — but Gmail almost always wins that race.

An email to the wrong Larry pushed me over the edge. I could undo just about any other action in Gmail — why couldn’t I undo send? Many people agreed, including Yuzo Fujishima, an engineer in the Tokyo office. My theory (which others shared) was that even just five seconds would be enough time to catch most of those regrettable emails.

And now you can do just that. Turn on Undo Send in Gmail Labs under Settings, and you’ll see a new “Undo” link on every sent mail confirmation. Click “Undo,” and we’ll grab the message before it’s sent and take you right back to compose.

This feature can't pull back an email that's already gone; it just holds your message for five seconds so you have a chance to hit the panic button. And don't worry – if you close Gmail or your browser crashes in those few seconds, we'll still send your message.

I've had Undo Send turned on for a while and it's saved me several times. Let us know if it saves you too.

Robert, thanks for the heads up. So that takes care of Google mail - hopefully my other email accounts will get on board with this. I definitely send some I wish I could recall due to attachment not being there, etc.

Hi Robert! I so need that undo send button! I haven't forgotten to attach the item my email is for more times than I care to mention.....maybe my button could just say - "do you have any attachments dummy?"

I am sure it will save my butt a few times.  I get a few emails a week that are followed up with an 'oops' email.  I think it happens to all of us, now we get the chance to take it back before it is too late.

Robert:  This is a great idea... but honestly... I do not think I am that quick about anything that I could catch it within the five second time period.  Maybe a slightly longer period could be available for us slower folks ??  Thanks for sharing...

Some think it looks unprofessional not to use a yourname@yourcompany email but I dont have a problem with professionals I deal with using gmail at all.  For me it shows that they have some common sense.  As long as their username/email address isnt  kuteypie69@gmail  or something stupid.

That's good to know it's always within the 5 sec that I realize what I forgot.  I'm glad gmail can do that.  I also have a gmail account and i do find it good.

I learned something new!  I use gmail and never knew about this feature.  I know that even in those brief 5 seconds that it would have saved me a lot of times.  I often hit send and instantly realized I forgot to attach the file!  Thanks for stopping by my Street Trees post.

That is a cool feature, I do have to wonder if it works for us that use an outside provider such as Outlook to send our Gmail.
