Submit Your Website to Free Directories Online

Yesterday I received an email from a fellow AR member who was asking me for a good source for inbound links.   I have my website included in many directories online, many of which I manually submitted it to myself, but also many more that I paid to have my site submitted to.  Directories are like an online version of the yellow pages.  They are simply central websites that contain links to many other wesites by category.  At one time they were extremely significant in achieving top search engine placement.  While they are not as significant a factor anymore, they are still important and a cheap and simple way to increase your websites presence on the internet and search engine ranking.

Directory submission is definitely something that you can do yourself, and there are lots of free directories that you can submit your website to.  The only drawback to submitting to lots of these free directories is that it takes quite a bit of time to search them all out, then to fill in all the same information over and over and clicking submit.  If you get busy doing submissions, you can maybe submit to 10 in an hour, so depending upon what your time is worth you may wish to do that.

A better way is to pay a professional submission service to submit you to the free directories.  They obviously utilize some automated script to fill in the forms, as they charge as little as 14 cents per submission!   For that low price, I can't imagine that anyone would want to do it any other way.

Here is the company that I have successfully used to submit my sites to the free directories:

I would recommend anyone with a website spends $30 or $40 on directory submission.  Having your site listed in all those free directories create lots of one way links to your site, helps the search engines spider it much much more often, and keeps you current in the search engine placements.

Good advice.  Directories are good backlinks.

Robert, I am amazed that I can learn so many things each day here on AR. I didn't know about these directories!

I agree, the first thing I do when making a new site is get it into directories, spend $40 on submission, spend $40 on adwords, spend $20 on other advertising.   For $100 it gets your site spidered into the search engines ultra fast and gets you to a place that would normally take a year to achieve.

Connie, you can google up 'free online directories' and find long lists of them.  Some are geographically specific, some are industry specific, some just list anyone and everyone.  I use the paid submission service, but still look for the one specific to my area.   Submission is free if you want to do it yourself.  So nobody has an excuse to not be listed, even those who are too cheap to spend $20 bucks to get someone else to do it for you.

Spokane Real Estate Expert! Yeah the key is to remember that not all directories are good for you, low rated or link farm directories can actually hurt you so it helps to do a little research, wuality beats quantity.

Very interesting. I have not pursued listings in directories. I guess you have found that it does make a difference.

Glad to share.  I am always interested in the free stuff lol, or at least the inexpensive stuff that can increase traffic and leads.  Thanks for commenting, I really appreciate all you AR people.

Sounds like a good resource -- will have to check it out. All the best.

Comment on quality over quantity is an important one.  Not all directories are created equally and some will even do harm to your ranking.

Yes, that is why avoiding link farms is a good idea.  Directory maximizer (their link is in the blog) does a great job, that is why I used them over the many others out there.

Robert- Sounds very interesting, I have 3 web sites now. Do you think this might create traffic for me?

I am not sure that it creates raw clicks, but it does help targetted traffic find you in more places and improves your ranking in google.  So those probably do increase visitors.  There are other programs that increase traffic that I have used, but I find that raw clicks are pretty worthless unless you are only hoping to turn them into adsense revenue.  Otherwise they just come to your site and click right through.
