Link Exchange, SEO, Your Website, and What to Do Next

Many people have websites that go completely unknown and unnoticed due to their lack of proper search engine optimization.  For some people, they have no idea where to start when it comes to tweaking and improving their website so that it not only gets picked up by google but also is looked at by google as being a relevant website and receive a higher placement.

Take for example a site that I just recently started in mid-january, about 30 days ago.  That site is:  LethbridgeRealEstateBlog.com    This is now my outside blog for Active Rain and has received great traffic and has actually generated prospects for my business already.

Since starting from scratch I was able to take that website and not only get the top organic placement in google for my keywords, I have also taken 4 of the top 10 google placements for my keywords.  That is amazing, that I was able to take a website less than 4 weeks old and knock much older and well established sites out of their placement so quickly and easily, and you can do it too.  Some people without any experience at SEO will have their websites sit for weeks or even months without ever peing spidered by the search engines.

Learning SEO skills is fairly easy if you take an interest in it and spend some time tweaking and modifying your site to gather feedback on what works and what does not.  One of the criteria which has decreased in significance lately, but is still important for a few reasons is inbound links to your website.  Google believes that if other people see your site as credible, informational, and valuable then they will link to it, makes sense.  The number of links to a great site is many many more then the number of links to a crappy useless site with no content or value.

There are 3 ways to gain links.  1. Post lots of good content on your site and eventually people will find it and link to it.   2. Buy links on other sites and directories.  3. Exchange links with other people who have similar content sites with similar keywords and content.

"If you build it he will come."  If you build a great website you will find that people approach you and ask to have a link on your site.  As an example,  LethbridgeRealEstateBlog.com  website has had 3 requests this week from others in the mortgage industry requesting to have a link placed on one of my pages.  Now you do not want to become a link farm, but selecting key linking partners is a great way to increase your links to keyworded sites as well.

So here is your chance to get a link to your website out.  Make a comment here on this blog, list the url of your website and a description of it and invite others with similar content to exchange a link with you.  Dont post your URL if you will not exchange with other good sites and dont be offended if your site is crappy and people dont want to link with you, improve your site instead.

Here is my site and criteria:

LethbridgeRealEstateBlog.com
a blog about real estate and mortgage financing focusing upon Lethbridge Alberta. Accepting link exchanges from others who have sites that match any 2 of these criteria:
1. decent google pagerank
2. regularly changing and updating content (like a blog etc)
3. real estate and/or mortgage content
4. website about Lethbridge

*FREE TIP: hey AR people, notice how I hyperlinked the website name and my keywords so they link to my website.  Google notices not only what pages, but also what words link to your site.  Link your keywords to your site and your ranking for those keywords will improve!

Robert, that's very informative.  I am just trying to get a handle on the whole SEO thing as I really just started with a concious effort to improve my rank.  I picked up SEO for dummies.  I'll let you know how I progress.  Thanks again.  kevincavanaughonline.com

Just be careful. If a consumer sees a page full of links and it makes no sense to them they could turn and run away quick.

That is correct Shane.  Properly placed links will be placed in a resource section or a special link area, or sometimes even concealed from public view through making them invisible.  Depending upon the goal of the link.

Hey Robert - great info!  Thanks.  I am just now trying to get a handle on all of this.  I have been 100% repeat and referral based over the past several years, so I didn't need the general public to find me.  I am working to change that as the market changes. Great post!

Robert, thanks for the SEO information.  I am still trying to tweak my website as well as my blog.  I am still learning and growing at the same time.

We all learn as we go.  Lots of keywords and keyword links remain a valuable tool in promoting a website.  This will never change, but the type of links and content will become more important soon.
