Road to the Kentucky Derby 2009

As the contenders start to emerge for the 2009 Kentucky Derby, it is obvious that the quality of young horse this year is amazing.  Last years exploits by the great Big Brown and the amazing year by Curlin helped to draw attention to the Sport of Kings.  This year there are many young horses looking to follow in those footsteps.  Of course many of those who are following the path to Churchill Downs will falter early in the year and not live up to their pre-derby hype.

Some of the horses that I have my eyes upon as early contenders are: delightful kiss, friesan fire, indygo mountain, professor z, ryehill dreamer, pioneer of the nile.  These are all young horses with tremendous potential and I expect the winner of the Kentucky Derby, and possibly the a triple crown winner, to be in that elite group of 6 horses.

I left out Midshipman and Champagne, as they are training overseas in Dubai, something which has never yet proven a successful strategy to win a Derby. Old Fashioned, Charitable Man, Beethoven, Giant Oak, Stardom Bound, Well Positioned, Alma D'oro, and Square Eddie also are names which will be on everyone elses radar.

Of course we will have to wait until the first Saturday in May to find out for certain, but I have invested in the following domain names which honor the horses I am supporting to win.

Best of Luck to all the owner, trainers, jockeys, and contenders. I expect this year may be one of the
greatest races in Derby history.

Robert, the Kentucky Derby is always fun, and it's also a great excuse to whip up the mint julips!

Robert, I love horse racing but isn't it a bit to early for the derby talk. Now mint julips is a whole post unto itself :)

The wagering pools open this week for the early derby contenders.  It is a large field of 3 year olds and only about 1/5th of those on the early list actually make it to the race.  The rest fail to perform on the prep races or are not in form or good health.  That is what makes it interesting to start following it in January, it is sort of like watching the 'american idol' audition shows, lol.
