Trust me, we know what we are doing!

This morning I received a most comical phone call from a man who had the misfortune of calling me on my cell phone while I was fighting with holiday traffic in my local Costco parking lot.  The man on the other end of the phone spoke with a very strong accent which I believed was East Indian or Pakistani, and started his conversation by asking for me by my full name, something which always indicates that the call is going to be a winner.  Once he had established that I was in fact whom he wished to solicit he started to ramble on with a script that was so comical I simply had to share it.

(you will have to imagine the accent yourself) - "We see that you own the websites.  We would like to put your websites on the front page of the Google.  When people want to do business they will look at the front page of the Google and phone you.  Can we put you on the front page of the Google today?"

My first reaction and reply to the guy was "WHAT?!?!", partly because I couldn't understand what exactly he was talking about and partly because he was half way through before I mastered the accent and could actually understand him.  He was polite enough to then repeat the entire script for a second time.

Now while I think that being on the front page of "the Google" is a wonderful thing, I was unsure that random telephone solicitors hold they key to obtaining this goal.  I asked the man what his company was called and how they came across my information as I was curious to see if I had somehow got on yet another spammers and solicitors list someplace.  Now I can't recall the exact name, but it was something like ABCwebsitepromotors.NET (i made the name up) which suprised me that they weren't even a dot com.  When I returned home, I attempted to find the business that he was calling from online.  I searched for them many different ways, but the only way I could locate them was to search their domain name.  Their website had zero pagerank and millions on the alexa ranking. Their business is website promotion, but their website was so poorly promoted that they didnt even rate.

Why would I entrust such a task as getting onto the front page of 'the Google' or even simply increasing my pageranking, to a company who cannot even achieve that service for themselves?  Simple, I wouldn't.

To complete the story, later on the very same day I received the exact same call from the exact same guy.  I am not sure if he hadn't crossed me off his list of if he was calling on one of my other domain names, but it was funny to have him call back with the exact same script a second time.

Not everyone even WANTS to be on the first page.  Sometimes, it isn't as important to be on the first page as to be available to your intended audience.  And how totally frustrating it is to have people call you over and over about the same thing.  Do they not realize that there is a certain thing called CUSTOMER SERVICE that they are sorely lacking in??  Sorry.  You're getting me started.

Robert: I can't help but feel sorry for those solicitors that try so hard to read their scripts with correct pronunciation. I know I couldn't do it!

I can't help giving back to those that choose to contact us on our free time.

Sometimes, I just start talking in the same accent as they are(only 10 x worse) and make sure they can't understand me. Eventually, they hang up on me!
